McGill law student Simone Samuels awarded national scholarship for black students

I am forever grateful to FMC (now Dentons) and the BBPA for this scholarship.

#faceapp It's always lowkey been my wish that Jesus comes back before I get old. I've always associated being elderly with being in pain, being miserable, and being lonely, because that seemed to be the story of all of the old people I've ever met. And I could picture myself in my nursing home all alone, watching re-runs of Maury, playing Bingo, doing a one-two step during the line dance activity for seniors, peeing when I laugh, depending on my Depends, dimmed vision and otherwise bored to tears while sitting in my walker. And I thought that if this is what getting old looks like, then I passsss. Either God translates me like Enoch as soon as possible, or He comes back before I turn seventy. -- But I want to meet this person -- eighty-year-old Simone.👵🏿 I mean, at first I was horrified. She's not the prettiest. She's not exactly aesthetically pleasing. She probably doesn't turn heads anymore. But I like this face. This is the face of someone who has lived. She seems like an interesting person. She seems kind and she seems wise. She looks like she can cook. And those laugh lines are a dead giveaway that she loves a good chuckle...that her sense of humour is on point, that she's hiding both a secret and a story. I would love to sit at her feet as I absorbed whatever advice she could give me today at 31... telling me not to worry about the things that currently cause me grief, comforting me, encouraging me. And if this is what I would become -- a #Proverbs31 woman of wisdom -- then it would be a privilege to get old and look like this. -- This app is too accurate. #faceappchallenge #faceapp🙈😂 #faceapp😂

The absolute LAAASSSSSTTT thing I wanted to do after work this evening was attend a two hour boot camp, but as I hiked up Church Street I whispered to myself, "Must. See. Louise. Green."🏃🏿‍♀️ *faints* 😵 (slight exaggeration😂). -- You see, @louisegreen_bigfitgirl is someone who I have looked up to ever since I ventured into the fitness industry. I have her book #BigFitGirl. I follow her on all of her social media platforms. She has been my virtual mentor. I can't tell you how it did my heart so much good seeing someone who looks like me leading a boxing class this evening. 😍 #representationmatters -- @sportchek held a free Fitness Day today called #movemakers . It partnered with three Move Makers (of which Louise is one) who are redefining what movement means to Canadians. -- The take home message I got my Louise was to discover enjoyable movement and do it as often as I can. Zumba is my fix but I'm currently trying to challenge myself in this area. (Boxing maybe?). 🥊 -- I also got to meet @fitnessbysarahtaylor and the awesome babes from her plus-size studio in Toronto. -- Ok. My face after my doctor's appointment (and 'cause I was kinda feeling myself today). My family physician is Black, she's a woman, she understands my references to @insecurehbo, relates to me, she's struggled with fertility, she's not disparaging when I mention the possibility of seeing a naturopath ("I love naturopaths!" she said) and it's my third appointment and my weight has never come up! She hasn't even weighed me. In our first appointment I told her that I would never be 150 lbs. She replied, "fine by me." Look at God. My blood work came back as normal. I.e. I'm still fat and fit and healthy (though a little low on vitamin D). A friend referred her to me and said she would travel to see her doctor if she had to. I now understand why. Unforunately she's not taking any more patients and I barrrrely slid in but I just want to exclaim "They exist! It's great to be hired not inspite of who you are but because of who you are. Let me explain. 💚 Months ago, when I was still in Ottawa, Nessa of @fitzoneplus reached out to me to ask if I would be interested in teaching at her #bodypositive studio in Toronto. She thought that I'd be a great fit. This was before she even knew that I actually lived in Ottawa and was in the process of relocating back to Toronto. (see how God works?) 💚 Now don't get me wrong-- Nessa didn't hire me because I'm big. I'd like to think that she hired me because of my personality and qualifications and my approach to fitness. That said, she hired me because of who I am. While some gyms would hire me in spite of being plus-sized, #FitZonePlus hired me on the basis of all that I bring to the table -- size too. 💚 It's precisely because I'm plus-sized that I'm able to offer empathetic service to my students. My size is what makes me different and it's typically what makes you different that becomes your selling point. After years of wishing I could fit in and finally realizing that maybe I'm not meant to be small, I'm glad that my size is mine. God realized (and now I agree) I'd serve people better this way. Maybe God created me like this for a purpose. 💚 (And it's so cool to work alongside other #bopo instructors-- many of them plus-sized.) 💚 Here I am standing beside the sign after subbing a Zumba class at this evening. I teach group personal training there on Tuesdays at 6:45 PM. #tbt #throwbackthursday #latergram Apparently nine years ago today I graduated from @yorkuniversity #glendoncampus . Also, I gave a shout out to my Dad on #FathersDay on Facebook but not on IG so here goes: 🎓 I'm seeing all of you post photos of your father. I wasn't sure what, if anything, to post this year, but I'm reflecting on my trip to Bad Boy Furniture this evening. 🎓 I don't think I've ever heard my father tell me, "I love you." But living at home these past few months has reminded me of how he has told me he loves me in so many ways. 🎓 My father has severe arthritis in his ankle, which makes walking painful and difficult. And yet, even though I'm 31 years old and I have walked home many a night by myself in all the cities in which I have lived, he still waited up for me and hobbled to meet me at the bus stop late one night and walk me home. 🎓 And even though he gave me heck (*heck* I tell you) while moving out of the infamous basement apartment, by the end of this year, he would have packed and driven and moved me from one place to another at least three times. 🎓 And when I was trying to figure out whether to leave or stay, he told me that I could always come home. 🎓 And even though most people my age have their driver's license he still offers to drive me wherever I need to go. 🎓 And when my adult self almost cried after being approved for yet another apartment but ultimately had to turn it down, he and my mother committed to finding an apartment for me and have gone to more apartment viewings than I have. 🎓 He is not perfect by any means, and my parents have hurt me as I'm sure I've hurt them. Our relationship certainly is not perfect. And now I'm starting to see them age; the idea that they won't always be around scares me. 🎓 But today, when my father drove me to Bad Boy to buy my bedroom set, the regional manager said to me, "I can tell your father is proud of you. You're not even my daughter and I'm proud of you too." 🎓 My Dad loves me. 🎓 So in the spirit of reposting the same photo every year because my father and I do not often take photos together, Happy Father's Day to my father and all other fathers out there.
